Geddes Park Barn Demolition | Municipality of Kincardine

Project Overview

The Municipality of Kincardine will be removing the barn located at the entrance to Geddes Park due to structural deficiencies identified through an assessment by a structural engineer.

Demolition is anticipated to take place during the week of August 31, 2026. The barn will be removed from the site, after which the area will be restored through naturalization and planting.

The barn is currently vacant. It was most recently used for storage by community and labyrinth garden user groups. That storage has been relocated to new storage sheds on site.

Background

The Geddes Park barn is part of the history of the Geddes Park property and its connection to the Geddes family. A heritage plaque documenting the history of the barn is anticipated to be installed in spring 2027.

Why Is the Barn Being Demolished?

An assessment by a structural engineer determined that the barn is structurally deficient and recommended its removal for the safety of park users and the public.

Cracking was identified in the foundation walls, and remediation of the structure was not recommended due to the severity of the deficiencies and associated costs.

As a result, the Municipality is proceeding with removal of the barn.

Demolition Details & Timeline

Expected work period: Week of August 31, 2026

During the demolition:

The barn will be removed from the site by the contractor.
The Geddes Park parking lot will be closed.
The pathway to the parking lot, including the affected section of the Red Trail, will be closed.
Residents and park users can expect construction noise and truck traffic in the area.

The remainder of Geddes Park will remain accessible. The labyrinth can still be accessed via the Red Trail, but not through the barn entrance or the closed area.

For everyone's safety, please avoid the demolition area while work is underway.

After Demolition

Once the barn has been removed, the area will be restored through naturalization, including new plantings and grasses.

The storage previously located in the barn has already been relocated to new storage sheds on site, so no replacement storage facility is required as part of the demolition project.

A heritage plaque documenting and commemorating the history of the barn is anticipated to be installed in spring 2027.
