Notice of Intent to Spray Invasive Phragmites – September 8–18, 2026

september 8th through 18th

The Municipality of Kincardine will be conducting herbicide applications to manage invasive Common Reed (Phragmites australis) between September 8 and 18, 2026, weather permitting.

The Municipality manages areas throughout Kincardine that are impacted by invasive Phragmites. Due to the aggressive and invasive nature of this plant, herbicide application is an important part of the Municipality’s ongoing Phragmites management program and is used to help control established infestations and limit further spread.

Areas being treated

Herbicide applications will occur in identified areas of invasive Phragmites, including:

  • Shoreline areas
  • Roadside ditches, including areas along Concession 5 and Concession 10, Sunset Drive, County Roads 23 and 33, and surrounding side roads
  • Select municipal properties, including the Mystic Cove footpath, Municipal Airport, Bruce Avenue wastewater lagoons and the Public Works Yard

Treatment locations may vary based on current site conditions and the presence of invasive Phragmites.

Herbicide application and safety

Herbicide applications are regulated in Ontario under the Pesticides Act. The Municipality's Phragmites control program is conducted in accordance with applicable provincial requirements and by qualified personnel.

The herbicide being used is Roundup WEATHERMAX, with the active ingredient glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine).

Application is weather dependent and will only take place when conditions are appropriate. Conditions are assessed by licensed pesticide applicators before and during spraying activities.

The treatment is intended to kill standing Phragmites by allowing the active ingredient to move from the foliage into the plant’s root system. Visible effects are gradual, with plants wilting and turning yellow before the above-ground growth browns and the underground plant material deteriorates.

What residents need to know

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid areas while spraying is underway and immediately following application.

Signs will be posted in the general treatment areas prior to spraying activities and will identify areas where herbicide application is taking place. Treatment may be postponed or cancelled if weather conditions are not suitable.
