Lagoon Sludge Removal Project Update
June 16, 2026
The Municipality of Kincardine is providing an update on ongoing work at the Kincardine wastewater lagoons as part of the multi-year Lagoon Sludge Removal Project.
This essential maintenance project is underway to restore treatment capacity and improve the long-term performance of the wastewater system. The work involves the controlled removal of accumulated sludge that has built up in the lagoon cells over many decades.
During this work, residents in surrounding areas may notice odours at times. Odours can vary depending on wind direction, temperature, and ongoing operational activity at the site. While unpleasant, these conditions are expected during active sludge removal.
The Municipality takes public health and safety seriously and understands residents' concerns about these odours. Staff continuously monitor conditions as part of regular operational and safety procedures, and no concerns have been identified. While odours may be noticeable, the Municipality has not identified any information to suggest they pose a risk to public safety.
Municipal staff are working with engineering consultants and contractors to complete the project in phases over multiple years. Additional measures, including operational adjustments and aeration improvements, are being used where possible to support lagoon performance during the work.
The Municipality continues to monitor conditions, review resident concerns, and work with project partners throughout the sludge removal process. If any risk to public health or safety is identified, the Municipality will take appropriate action and communicate promptly with residents.
This project is part of a long-term program to improve wastewater treatment capacity and maintain reliable service for the community.
