KINCARDINE, ON –  The Municipality of Kincardine is pleased to announce that the Province of Ontario has approved a new Community Safety Zone on Highway 21 near the Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School (KTTPS).

Council requested additional safety measures to help enhance safety in an area that experiences significant daily traffic, including school buses, student drivers, commuters, and other road users.

The Community Safety Zone will extend along Highway 21 from approximately 300 metres south of the KTTPS entrance to approximately 300 metres north of the school entrance. It encompasses the primary school access area, including student drop-off and pick-up, school bus operations, and the section of roadway with the highest level of vehicle activity.

"The safety of our children, families, and all road users has been a priority for Council," says Mayor Kenneth Craig. "We're proud of the work that has gone into advocating for additional safety measures along this busy corridor. The new Community Safety Zone is an important step toward creating a safer environment for students travelling to and from Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School."

A Community Safety Zone designation will help alleviate longstanding concerns around traffic along this busy stretch of road, ensuring a safer drop-off and pick-up experience in the morning and at the end of the school day."

The Community Safety Zone designation provides the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with enhanced enforcement measures under the Highway Traffic Act, including increased penalties for certain traffic offences within the zone.

The designation will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. The Community Safety Zone will come into effect once the Ministry of Transportation uncovers the official Community Safety Zone signs.

The Municipality thanks the Province of Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario Provincial Police, Bluewater District School Board, and community members whose support helped advance this important safety initiative.

Watch for the new Community Safety Zone signs, obey the posted speed limit, and help keep all road users safe.
