National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women - December 6, 2025

The Municipality of Kincardine is lowering its flags to half-mast on December 6th, 2025, as we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. December 6 is a day to honour the 14 women who were killed at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. Their names, their futures, and their lives were taken because of their gender.

We remember:

  • Geneviève Bergeron
  • Hélène Colgan
  • Nathalie Croteau
  • Barbara Daigneault
  • Anne-Marie Edward
  • Maud Haviernick
  • Maryse Laganière
  • Maryse Leclair
  • Anne-Marie Lemay
  • Sonia Pelletier
  • Michèle Richard
  • Annie St-Arneault
  • Annie Turcotte
  • Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz

This day asks us to honour their memory while acknowledging the realities women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals continue to face. Gender-based violence remains a serious and widespread issue in Canada.

December 6 also falls within the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global movement encouraging people to learn, speak up, and work toward safer communities.

We encourage residents to take time today to reflect and learn more about this important day:

If you or someone you know needs support, Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey offers confidential help 24/7 at 519-396-9655 or 1-800-265-3026.

Today, and every day, we remember these women, support survivors, and continue working toward a future free from gender-based violence.
