Enhanced Accessible Transit Service Launches in Municipality of Kincardine

KINCARDINE, ON - Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART), in partnership with the Municipality of Kincardine, is launching expanded accessible transit services in the community beginning mid-March.

This pilot program will improve transportation options for residents who are unable to drive due to physical or cognitive disabilities, helping them stay connected to essential services, employment, and community life. SMART provides transportation services for a variety of needs, including medical appointments, social visits, community events, shopping, education, and employment.

The expanded service operates Monday to Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Service will be provided to any qualified user who is a property taxpayer or resident of the Municipality of Kincardine. Visitors of eligible residents can also use the service, provided they give the driver the name, phone number and address of the person they are visiting within the Municipality of Kincardine.

Service is delivered using a nine-passenger accessible vehicle equipped with a hydraulic lift to support passengers using wheelchairs or those who require assistance while standing.

Fares are set at $2.50 per kilometre, with a minimum charge of $12 per one-way trip. Support persons may accompany registered riders at no additional cost.

“This service reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive and accessible community,” said Mayor Kenneth Craig. “By working with SMART, we’re helping remove barriers and improve quality of life for residents.”

The service will be offered as a pilot through March 2027, allowing the Municipality and SMART to monitor usage and better understand community needs. Residents or their visitors must complete a client registration form and show proof of residency at the time of the ride. Once registered, rides can be booked by calling (226) 230-2341.
