Council approves “Lest We Forget” Remembrance Crosswalk Proposed by Kincardine Legion Branch 183

KINCARDINE, ON - The Municipality of Kincardine has approved the application from the Royal Canadian Legion, Kincardine Branch 183, to install a commemorative “Lest We Forget” crosswalk at the west-side crossing of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace, the closest intersection to the Kincardine Legion building.

The crosswalk is intended to honour the service and sacrifice of veterans from Kincardine and across Canada. In 2026, the Royal Canadian Legion marks the 100th anniversary of its incorporation, and the crosswalk is envisioned as a visible, everyday reminder of remembrance and gratitude.

The design includes two soldiers on a backdrop of white and grey stripes, with the words “Lest we forget” in red at each end of the crosswalk (See Attachment 1). Teri Leslie, the President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kincardine Branch 183 hopes that “every step across this crosswalk invites a moment of reflection of the sacrifices our Veterans made for our community.”

The goal is to install the commemorative crosswalk in July to be ready for the official 100-year birthday of the Legion on July 17, 2026. Mayor Craig stated, “Council is proud to support the creation of this commemorative crosswalk in recognition of the brave veterans who served our country. It is a small but meaningful way to honour the sacrifices made by those who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. It stands as a visible reminder of our community’s deep respect and gratitude for those who served.”
