Recognizing National Indigenous History Month in the Municipality of Kincardine

KINCARDINE, ON – June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. It’s a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit People. There will be several activities held to demonstrate commitment and inspire actions on the journey to reconciliation. Participation is open to everyone.

  • Davidson Centre, 601 Durham Street, Kincardine

Beyond Words: Dictionaries and Indigenous Languages Exhibit – June 2nd to 30th, 2025

To honour National Indigenous History Month through the sharing of knowledge, the Municipality is hosting an exhibit from the Canadian Language Museum.

This exhibit highlights the complex relationship between Indigenous languages and dictionaries over several centuries, from word lists and dictionaries developed for exploration, colonization, and assimilation purposes, to online language materials developed by Indigenous communities to transmit the elders’ knowledge to today’s youth.

Journey to Reconciliation Event – June 14th, 2025

The Municipality is hosting a day of learning, reflection, and cultural engagement on June 14th in Victoria Park, Kincardine. The event will feature:

  • “Building Meaningful Relationships with Indigenous Nations” Learning Circle from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. led by Christine John. Please register to participate in the Learning Circle online or call 519-396-3468.
  • Opening Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. led by Lorie Kewaquom.
  • Drumming from the Grandfather Drum Group and the Women’s Drum Group
  • Pow Wow dancers
  • A storytelling session with Kristi White
  • Indigenous vendors

All are welcome to attend and take part in this opportunity to listen, learn, and support reconciliation in a meaningful way.
